Mechanisms by Which Metabolic Modifiers Alter Growth Rate and Carcass Composition of Meat Animals

چکیده

The livestock industries utilize numerous means to alter the performance of meat animals and composition of their resulting carcasses. Inclusion of metabolic modifiers in production systems reflects a continuation of processes that began decades ago with genetic selection and progress in understanding of nutrition, health, and management. Any drug or management practice that affects efficiency of food animal production exerts its influence through at least one of three general mechanisms: • increased energy consumption above maintenance, • altered composition through reduced energy content of the empty body, or • improved efficiency of the processes that result in growth. This paper will focus on the effects of metabolic modifiers currently being used in the livestock industry, the mechanisms by which they exert their effects, and discussion of some practical considerations for their use. The primary example will be steroid growth implants in beef cattle. Other modifiers will be discussed as their effects differ from steroids.

Feeding of Safflower (Carthamus tintorius) Cake in Small Ruminant Total Mixed Rations: Effects on Growth Traits and Meat Fatty Acid Composition

Little scientific information is available that has evaluated safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) cake as a substitute to conventional ingredients in small ruminants diet. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of feeding safflower cake in total mixed rations (TMRs) on lamb and kid growth rates, carcass traits and meat fatty acid composition. Two consecutive trials were conducted us...

Relationships between chemical composition of meat from carcass cuts and the whole carcass in Iranian fattailed sheep as affected by breed and feeding level

To investigate the relationship between chemical composition of meat from the carcass cuts and thewhole carcass, 48 nine-month-old randomly selected ram lambs of Ghezel and Mehraban (24 rams per breed)were used in a trial arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial experiment with two breeds and two feeding levels (high andlow), in a completely randomized design. After 80 days, all animals were slaughtered a...

Endocrine regulation of fetal and postnatal meat animal growth.

Evidence is discussed which indicates that nutrient partitioning between muscle and adipose tissue can be altered by growth hormone administration in meat animals. In the limited number of studies conducted with meat animals, growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass composition were improved by growth hormone administration. When insulin was administered to normally growing swine no improvement...

Evaluation the Impact of Carcass Weight, Age at Slaughter, and Sex on the Chemical Composition of Lamb Meat: The Case of the Boutsiko Sheep Breed

The effect of carcass weight, age at slaughter and sex on some chemical components was evaluated in twenty-two Boutsiko lambs (twelve females and ten males). Chemical composition of meat was expressed as percentage of fat, protein, collagen and moisture content. Measures of the four chemical components were taken by carcass cuts included shoulder, leg, racks, kidney, rear flank, breast ribs and...

Different periods of feed restriction before compensatory growth in Belgian Blue bulls: I. animal performance, nitrogen balance, meat characteristics, and fat composition.

Thirty double-muscled Belgian Blue bulls were maintained at a rate of gain of .5 kg/d during four periods of time, 115 (G2), 239 (G3), or 411 (G4) d (low growth period, LGP), before fattening (rapid growth period, RGP). Ten control animals (CG) were fed a diet rich in energy and protein. The G2, G3, and G4 were fed a diet low in energy and protein and the same diet as CG during RGP. Live weight...
